Just go with the flow!

Have you ever received Reflexology? Yes!

Did your mind calm down and tension melt away? Yes!

Well, guess what…your Reflexologist may just feel as content and restored as you!

As Reflexologists, we focus our attention and concentrate on stimulating the flow of energy in the feet; we become fully immersed in the process and might even experience a 'flow' state of mind, also known as 'being in the zone'. It's so intrinsically rewarding; some Reflexologists will say they enjoy giving treatments as much as receiving them!

Achieving a state of flow can be a great way to make activities you love more engaging and enjoyable, whether it's dancing, singing, running or indeed, giving Reflexology.

The giver and receiver of Reflexology may experience timelessness; or a distorted sense of time during a treatment, allowing both parties to momentarily experience a welcome escape from reality and yet also feel grounded and centred. Such is the magic of this "very powerful and amazing therapy" (to quote Caroline's blog post).

The 'positive' psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi was the first to identify and research flow. He says a flow state is accomplished when an activity is challenging enough to keep your brain interested, while at the same time being skilled enough to tackle the challenge without it being too difficult. It can result in you not only losing track of time but also losing self-consciousness and inner criticism. Above all, it promotes happiness :)

It's fortunate then, that Jubilee College instils a sense of confidence in future-Reflexologists, by teaching Reflexology as both an ancient science and healing art – a balance of study, practice and knowledge with dedication, patience and loving care; and by providing an extensive tool-kit of skills, such as how to create a tailored treatment plan specific to your client's needs.

Trusting your ability is crucial, yet so is going with the flow, following your instincts and having faith in your intuition. Of course, it's marvellous to prepare a meticulous treatment plan, however your client won't necessarily know if you work the reflexes in a different order to what you first intended. It's important to remember that as long as you play all the right notes, it doesn't matter what order you play them in.

Imagine you are a trained jazz musician caught up in the enchanted moment of improvisation or an experienced artist making genius brush strokes seemingly with ease and effortlessness. Now imagine being a fully-qualified Reflexologist moving smoothly and naturally from reflex to reflex with grace and poise!

If you're already a Reflexologist, lucky you - allow yourself to enjoy 'being in the zone' next time you are working the zones of the feet! And if you're thinking of becoming a Reflexologist, what are you waiting for? A world of satisfaction and enjoyment awaits you…

As one of Debs students its true to say that my clients don't usually know what the next move is and if I go off track I can just quickly return to the plan without fuss. When first giving treatments I kept stopping to check what was next - this halted the flow and the client then knew I didn't know what I was doing. Confidence is the key - I'm slowly developing that. Thankyou Deb for this post x
